Nobody buys a roof because of the starter strip. Homeowners choose colors, compare warranties, look at samples in the driveway — and the two components that most determine whether the roof survives a North Texas squall line never come up.
Starter strips and ridge caps are the accessory shingles. They live at the edges: the eaves, the rakes, the hips, the ridge. Those are precisely the places wind attacks first, and they're the places we find failures on nearly every blow-off we're called to inspect.
If you want one question that separates a careful roofing bid from a cheap one, ask what starter and cap products are being used. The answer is revealing.
What Starter Strip Actually Does
The first course of shingles at the eave has nothing beneath it. Every other course bonds to the one below via the sealant strip. That first course would sit loose without something purpose-built underneath.
Starter strip solves it in two ways:
- It places a sealant bead at the edge. Factory starter has adhesive positioned to bond the first course down exactly where uplift pressure peaks.
- It closes the joints. The cutouts and seams between the first-course shingles land over solid starter material instead of over bare underlayment.
Starter belongs on the rakes too, not just the eaves. Rake edges are where wind gets its first grip on a roof, and a shingle field with no rake starter is a field waiting to unzip. Why Cut Shingles Fall Short
Cutting the tabs off a standard shingle to make starter is an old habit, and it's still widespread. It's cheaper — you use bundles you already have instead of buying a dedicated product.
The problem is geometry. Cut a laminated architectural shingle down and you either remove the sealant strip entirely or leave it several inches up from the edge, doing nothing where it's needed. You also get an inconsistent thickness that telegraphs through the first course.
There's a warranty angle too. Manufacturers increasingly require their own starter product as part of the specified system, particularly for enhanced wind coverage. Hip and Ridge Cap Products
At the top of the roof, cap shingles cover the joint where two planes meet. They have to bend over an angle without cracking, seal against wind coming over the peak, and — on ridge-vented roofs — cover the vent while letting air escape.
Purpose-made hip and ridge products are built for that:
- Thicker material, often with a heavier mat than field shingles
- Pre-scored or tapered so the bend doesn't fracture the mat
- Sized to the shingle exposure so the cap line looks even from the ground
- Color-matched to the field blend, which cut pieces rarely achieve
The traditional alternative is cutting 3-tab shingles into squares. They're thinner, they crack at the fold on a cold January install, and they're the first component to lift in a gust. On a roof with architectural shingles, they also look wrong — a thin cap line over a thick field.
Wind Performance Lives at the Edges
Aerodynamically, a roof isn't uniformly loaded. Negative pressure concentrates at corners, rakes, eaves, and ridges, which is why a storm rarely peels shingles out of the middle of a slope. It starts at an edge and works inward.
That's the whole argument for accessory shingles. The field product can carry an excellent wind rating, but if the perimeter and the ridge are held down by improvised pieces, the roof performs at the level of its weakest edge. What to Look for in a Proposal
A proposal that specifies the manufacturer's starter at eaves and rakes, and a matching hip-and-ridge cap product, tells you the roofer intends to install a complete system. A proposal that doesn't mention either is leaving room to improvise on site — with pieces cut from your field bundles.
Ask about ridge cap fastener length as well. Caps over a ridge vent need longer nails to reach solid framing through the vent material, and short nails at the ridge are a failure we see regularly.
