Nobody shops for drip edge. Homeowners compare shingle brands and warranty terms, and the drip edge roof detail at the eaves and rakes becomes an afterthought. Then a spring storm rolls through Wise County and shingles peel back from the edge while the middle of the roof looks untouched.

Roof edges are where wind gets its first grip and where water makes its last turn. These parts cost a small fraction of a roofing job, and they decide whether your fascia, soffit, and decking edge survive twenty years of Texas weather.

What Drip Edge Does

Drip edge is bent metal flashing — typically an L or T profile — installed along the eaves and up the rake edges. Its job is simple physics: water running down a shingle clings to the underside of the edge and curls backward. Drip edge gives it a hard break so it releases and falls clear.

That protects three things:

  • The decking edge. Plywood and OSB drink water at the cut edge faster than anywhere else. Wet edges delaminate, and soft decking will not hold a nail.
  • The fascia board. Backward-curling runoff rots the wood, and rotten fascia loosens the gutter hung on it.
  • The soffit and attic. Once the fascia is compromised, water and pests reach the soffit and framing behind it. Our guide to soffit and fascia covers what that looks like from below.

Drip edge also stiffens the roof edge, which matters when a gust tries to lift the first shingle course.

Starter Strips and Wind Uplift

A starter strip is a purpose-made course installed at the eave, and often up the rakes, beneath the first row of visible shingles. Its continuous adhesive bead seals the bottom edge of that first course. Cutting tabs off regular shingles to fake a starter puts the sealant in the wrong place or leaves gaps at every cutout — an entry point for wind.

Edge failure is not random. Wind pressure is highest at the perimeter and highest of all at corners, where airflow separates and creates suction. A gust that finds the smallest lip at the eave pushes underneath and peels the roof upslope. That is why wind damage usually starts as a strip of missing shingles along one edge, not a hole in the field.

Rake edges deserve the same attention. An unsealed rake is the most exposed line on the roof, and North Texas straight-line winds hit gable ends hard.

Gutter Apron and How the Edge Meets the Gutter

Eave drip edge and gutter apron are related but not interchangeable. Standard drip edge kicks water out and away; gutter apron has a longer leg that reaches over the gutter's back edge and drops water inside the trough.

Where the roof edge sits close to the gutter back, plain drip edge can let water sheet behind the gutter instead of into it — the classic cause of rotting fascia on a house that appears to have working gutters.

The order of assembly matters too:

  • At the eave, drip edge goes on the deck first and the underlayment laps over it, so water on the underlayment drains onto the metal.
  • At the rake, drip edge goes over the underlayment, so wind-driven rain cannot get behind it.
  • Overlaps run several inches, sealed at the joints, with fasteners spaced tightly enough that the metal cannot flutter.

Reversing that sequence defeats the purpose. When we quote gutters, we check the existing edge metal first — a gutter is only as good as the transition feeding it.

Code Expectations and Older Homes

Current residential roofing code generally calls for drip edge at both eaves and rakes on asphalt shingle roofs, with minimum joint overlap and defined fastener spacing. Manufacturer instructions add their own edge requirements, and a system warranty can hinge on them.

Plenty of older Wise County homes were roofed before drip edge was standard, or re-roofed by crews who reused whatever was there. If you can see raw decking edge from below, or the first course sags or curls, the edge detail is worth checking.

Signs Your Roof Edges Need Attention

  • Peeling paint, dark streaks, or soft spots on the fascia.
  • Gutters pulling away from the house or holding water at one end.
  • Shingle edges that lift by hand along the eave or rake.
  • Granule piles in the gutters concentrated at the edges.
  • Daylight or gaps between the shingle edge and the metal.

Any of these justify an inspection before the next storm season. Edges are cheap to fix and expensive to ignore.
