Every shingle wrapper carries a wind rating — 110, 130, or 150 MPH depending on the product line. Homeowners reasonably read that as a promise: buy the 130 and your roof handles 130 mile-per-hour wind. It doesn't work that way, and the gap between the number on the bundle and the performance on your house is where most blow-off damage lives.
We pull creased and missing shingles off North Texas roofs every spring, and the products are almost never the problem. The installation is. Understanding what the rating measures makes it obvious why.
What the Rating Actually Measures
Shingle wind ratings come from standardized laboratory uplift tests. Sample sections are built on a test deck, conditioned, and subjected to airflow at a set speed for a set duration. If the tabs stay down, the product earns the classification.
Two things about that test matter enormously:
- The samples are installed exactly to the manufacturer's printed specification — correct nail count, correct nail placement, correct starter, sealed adhesive strips.
- The test is a steady, controlled condition. Real storms deliver turbulent gusts, negative pressure at edges and corners, and debris impact all at once.
So the rating tells you the ceiling of what the product can do. Nothing about your roof can exceed it, and plenty can fall short of it.
Where the Number Comes From on Your Bundle
Higher-rated products generally earn the number through construction: heavier mats, wider and more aggressive sealant strips, and reinforced nailing zones that give installers a bigger target. Some manufacturers require additional fasteners — six nails instead of four — to unlock the top rating, and some also require specific starter and hip-and-ridge products from the same line.
That last point catches people out. The top wind figure printed on the marketing sheet is often an enhanced rating that only applies when the full system is installed as specified. Miss one component and you're back to the base number.
Installation Is What Decides Real Performance
Here's what we find on failed roofs, in rough order of frequency.
Nail placement
Nails driven above the nailing zone catch only one layer of shingle instead of pinning the course below. From the ground the roof looks perfect; in a squall line the tabs peel like a book. Overdriven nails cut through the mat, and underdriven nails leave heads that telegraph and wear.
Missing or improvised starter
Starter strip at the eaves and the rakes puts a factory sealant bead exactly where wind pressure is highest. Cut-up shingles used as starter often place that adhesive in the wrong spot or leave it out entirely. We cover this in detail in our article on starter strips and ridge caps.
Sealant strips that never bonded
Asphalt sealant needs warmth to bond. A roof installed on a cold January week may not seal until spring, and a windstorm in that window catches tabs that are still loose. Hand-sealing in cold-weather installs is the fix, and it's a step that separates careful crews from fast ones.
Edges and penetrations
Wind pressure concentrates at rakes, eaves, ridges, and corners. Loose drip edge, poorly fastened ridge caps, and unsecured flashing give the wind a starting point — once it gets under one course, it unzips the rest.
Choosing a Rating for a North Texas Home
Wise County gives wind plenty of room to work. Open pasture, hilltop building sites, and two-story elevations with long unbroken slopes all see higher effective pressures than a house tucked behind mature trees.

On sheltered lots, a solid mid-tier shingle installed correctly will outperform a premium shingle installed badly, every time.
What to Ask Your Roofer
Ask which nailing pattern they'll use and whether the product requires six nails for its rating. Ask what starter product goes at the eaves and the rakes. Ask what they do about sealing on a cold-weather install. Ask whether the hip and ridge product matches the shingle system.
