An asphalt shingle is a fiberglass mat coated in asphalt and armored with granules. A hailstone can hit hard enough to crack that mat while barely disturbing the granules on top, so from the driveway the shingle looks untouched.
Up close we find these by feel as much as sight: a bruise that gives under thumb pressure, sometimes with a fine crack radiating out as the shingle flexes. That fracture is a hinge, and every hot afternoon and cool night works it wider until the crack runs clean through to the underlayment.
Broken Sealant Bonds
Every shingle course is glued to the one below by a factory adhesive strip that bonds in the sun. Straight-line wind gets under the tab edge, lifts it, and breaks that bond without tearing the shingle or pulling a nail.
The shingle lies back down and looks flat. It is now a loose flap held only by its nails, and because North Texas rain arrives sideways, that gap need not face uphill to leak.

Nail Pops and Fastener Movement
Wind flexing the roof plane and thermal movement in the decking gradually walk nails back out of the wood. The head lifts the shingle above it into a small tent that eventually wears through the mat, leaving a fastener-sized hole directly over the deck. Where shingles were overdriven or high-nailed to begin with, one storm can create dozens of pops at once.
Pipe Boots, Vents, and Gaskets
The soft parts of a roof take impact worst. Rubber pipe-boot collars bruise, split, or tear at the pipe. Plastic vent housings crack across the hood where sun has already made them brittle. Turbine and box-vent flanges dent enough to break their seal against the shingle course.
These penetrations usually leak first, because they concentrate water instead of shedding it.
Why It Looks Fine From the Driveway
Granules mask everything. The visible surface is a layer of mineral armor that stays intact and uniform while the material underneath is compromised.
Distance and pitch hide the rest. From ground level you see the bottom third of a slope at a sharp angle, where bruising, hairline cracks, unsealed tabs, and dented flashing do not resolve — and the worst-hit slopes are usually the ones you cannot see from the street.
