Downspout extensions get treated as an accessory, which is backwards. Gutters only solve half the problem — they collect water and carry it to one point. What happens at that point decides whether the system protects the house or concentrates a season's rainfall into the worst possible spot.

Why Discharge Location Matters Here
Our clay soils swell when they take on water and shrink when they dry. A downspout dumping at the slab edge soaks a narrow band of soil while the rest of the yard bakes, so one part of the foundation sits in swollen soil and another in shrinking soil. Repeat that through a Texas year of downpours and drought and you have built a movement cycle right where you least want one.
The backfill next to a foundation makes it worse. That soil was disturbed during construction and never packs as tight as undisturbed ground, so it takes water readily and channels it down along the beam. And a single downspout may serve a large roof plane, so an enormous volume exits one narrow tube during a cloudburst.
Splash Blocks: A Starting Point, Not a Fix
A splash block keeps discharge from digging a hole in the flower bed and breaks the water's force. But it drops the water a foot or two from the slab, which on clay is still the wet zone. Treat splash blocks as erosion control. If they are the only thing under your downspouts, you have not moved the water yet.
Surface Extensions
The simplest real improvement is an extension: a length of downspout, a hinged flip-up, or a roll-out sleeve carrying discharge past the backfill onto ground that slopes away.
- Rigid extensions outlast flexible ones. Corrugated flex pipe crushes under a mower wheel and holds silt in its ridges.
- Hinged elbows solve the mowing problem. They flip up for yard work and drop back down after.
- Keep the fall continuous. An extension that dips in the middle holds water.
- Aim somewhere useful. Discharge onto turf or a swale, never toward a neighbor's slab, a walkway that ices in a freeze, or an AC pad.
Buried Extensions and Underground Drains
Where a long surface run would cross a lawn or a patio, burying the line is the tidy answer. A buried extension takes discharge to a pop-up emitter well out in the yard, or daylights at a low point on a sloped lot.
Done properly it uses solid-wall pipe rather than perforated pipe, continuous fall from the downspout to the outlet, a clean-out at the top, and an emitter that stays shut between rains so it does not fill with mulch.
The trade-off is honest: once the drain is underground you cannot see it fail. Grit, catkins, and granules that used to wash harmlessly onto the lawn now settle inside the pipe. Grading Does the Rest
Extensions fail on flat or backward-sloped ground because the water sits and soaks in. Before spending on drainage hardware, walk the perimeter during a rain and watch where water actually goes.
Soil should fall away from the foundation for the first several feet. Beds built above the slab line, mulch mounded against brick, and edging that dams runoff all trap water at the wall. Fixing grade often costs less than any pipe you could bury.
What About Rain Chains?
Rain chains look good, and they are a legitimate choice in one narrow case: a short run over a covered entry feeding a basin or rock bed, where the roof area is small. They are water features, not drainage.
In a cloudburst a chain cannot move the volume a downspout moves, and wind throws the stream sideways onto the wall. If a downspout looks wrong on the front elevation, a round profile or a color matched to the trim solves that without giving up capacity.
