Capacity Is Two Numbers, Not One
A gutter system has two constraints, and the smaller one governs. The trough has to carry water along the eave, and the downspouts have to take it away. Fail either and the run floods.
Most undersized systems in our area fail at the downspout, not the gutter. Homeowners see the big trough on the fascia and assume it is the bottleneck, but a wide gutter with one small outlet at the far end is a bathtub with a straw in it. Water backs up from the outlet, fills the run, and pours over the front lip.
Five-Inch vs Six-Inch Gutters
Five-inch K-style is the residential default and it is genuinely fine on a lot of homes: single story, moderate pitch, modest roof planes, no long uninterrupted runs.
Six-inch earns its place when any of these apply:
- Large roof planes. More square footage draining to one eave means more gallons per minute arriving at the same trough.
- Steep pitch. Water leaves a steep slope faster and with momentum, so peak flow is higher and overshoot at the lip is more likely.
- Long runs. A forty-foot run feeding one corner has to carry everything upstream of that corner.
- Metal roofs. Slick panels shed almost instantly, with none of the delay a granulated shingle surface provides.
Six-inch gutters also pair with larger downspouts, which is where much of the real gain comes from. Bigger troughs clog less easily too, because the same handful of leaves blocks a smaller share of the opening.
Downspouts Do Half the Work
Downspout capacity comes from three things: outlet size, number, and placement.
Outlet size matters most. Stepping up from a small rectangular downspout to a larger profile increases the cross-section substantially, and the larger tube also passes twigs and catkins that would jam a narrow one.
Count and placement matter next. Splitting a long run so each end drains beats a single outlet in the middle, because water covers less distance before it exits. Outlets belong at the low points the pitch actually drains toward, not wherever the wall looks tidiest.
Then there is the elbow stack. Every bend costs flow, and a downspout that jogs around a bay window or a chimney chase with several elbows moves less water than a straight drop. It is also the first place a clog forms.
Where Roofs Beat Gutters: Valleys
Valleys are the sizing detail most estimates ignore. Two roof planes funnel their combined runoff into one line, and that line exits at a single point above the gutter. In a heavy storm the water arrives with enough velocity to launch straight over the trough, which is why you sometimes see a waterfall in one spot while the rest of the gutter runs half empty.
The fix is not a bigger gutter along the whole house. It is a splash guard or diverter at the valley exit, oversized gutter in that section, and an outlet placed close to where the water lands.
Signs Your System Is Undersized
- Overflow at the same spot in every hard rain, especially below a valley.
- Downspouts that gurgle and back up rather than running full and steady.
- Erosion trenches or splash staining on brick at one corner of the house.
- Gutters that sag mid-run under storm water weight.
- A single downspout serving a long stretch of roofline.
Any of these means adding outlets or upsizing, not another cleaning.
