Those dark vertical stains running down your north slope aren't dirt, they aren't mildew, and they aren't a sign the shingles are wearing out. Black streaks on a roof are a living organism — a hardy blue-green algae that has found a food source in your shingles and a climate it likes.

North Texas gives it exactly what it wants: humid stretches through spring and early summer, warm nights, and long shaded slopes that stay damp after a storm. Once it takes hold on one roof in a neighborhood, spores travel on the wind and the houses downwind follow.

The good news is that it's treatable and largely preventable. The bad news is that the wrong cleaning method does more damage than the algae ever would.

What the Streaks Actually Are

The organism is Gloeocapsa magma. It's a cyanobacteria that feeds on the limestone filler manufacturers blend into asphalt shingles as an inexpensive bulking agent. As it grows, it produces a dark, UV-protective outer sheath — and that sheath, multiplied across millions of cells, is what you see as black staining.

The streaking pattern is simply gravity at work. Colonies establish near the ridge, and every rain washes cells down the slope, seeding new growth in vertical stripes. That's why the stains widen as they descend and why they stop abruptly at a valley or a wall.

Why North-Facing Slopes Get It First

Look at almost any stained roof and the north and northeast slopes are worst. Those planes get the least direct sun, so morning dew and rainwater linger for hours longer than on the south side. Algae needs sustained moisture, and shade provides it.

Add anything else that holds damp — overhanging live oak limbs, a chimney's shadow line, a second-story wall shading a lower roof — and you'll find heavier growth right beneath it. Trimming branches back to open a slope to sunlight and airflow is one of the cheapest preventive steps there is.

Algae-Resistant Shingles and How They Work

Most major manufacturers now offer AR (algae-resistant) shingles. The technology is straightforward: a share of the surface granules are coated with or manufactured from copper or zinc. Rainfall releases trace metal ions that wash down the slope, and algae can't get established where those ions are present.

Two things to understand before you count on it:

  • It's a term-limited feature. The protection is strongest early and weakens as granules weather and the metal leaches out. Manufacturers back it with a stated algae warranty period, which is shorter than the shingle warranty.
  • You have to specify it. AR granules are a product line choice, not a default. When we spec a roof replacement, we'll tell you which lines include it and what the algae coverage runs.

The same physics explains the old-house trick of a copper or zinc strip installed near the ridge. It works, but coverage is uneven, streaking can appear below gaps, and it does nothing for the staining already there.

Cleaning Existing Stains Without Wrecking the Roof

Here is where homeowners get into trouble. A pressure washer will absolutely remove algae — along with the granule layer that protects the asphalt from UV. Blast a stained slope clean and you may have traded a cosmetic problem for accelerated aging, the kind of granule loss that shortens a roof's remaining life by years.

Safe practice looks like this:

  • Low pressure only. Soft-wash methods rely on chemistry and dwell time, not force.
  • Approved cleaning solutions, applied per the shingle manufacturer's guidance. The wrong chemistry can attack sealant strips and asphalt.
  • Protect what's below. Landscaping, siding, and metal fixtures need pre-wetting and rinsing.
  • Expect gradual results. Staining often continues to fade for weeks after treatment.
  • Never walk a hot roof. Asphalt softens badly in July, and foot traffic on softened shingles scuffs granules loose.

Algae is cosmetic, but the conditions that let it thrive — trapped moisture, poor drainage, heavy shade — also favor real problems. We've pulled back stained shingles and found rotted decking below a clogged valley, or a pipe boot that had been weeping for a season.
