- The trough rolls forward. Once the outer lip tips down, the gutter stops catching water off the shingles even after everything thaws.
- Seams open. On sectional gutters, expanding ice pushes the joints apart and the sealant lets go.
- Fascia softens. With the screw holes enlarged, water tracks into the end grain and the board rots where nobody looks.
An ice-loaded gutter rarely springs back. It has to be re-hung and re-pitched into sound wood.

Water standing at the bottom of a downspout freezes first: the elbow at grade is the coldest, slowest-draining point in the system. That plug traps the next round of meltwater, the column freezes upward, and expanding ice has one place to go — outward against the seam.
What you get is a downspout quietly burst along its back seam or popped at its crimped joints. It still looks straight from the street. Then real rain arrives and water pours down the wall behind it, into the siding and the expansive clay soil at your slab.

Water Backing Up Under the Shingle Edge
The costliest winter gutter problem is the one that ends up inside the roof. When the trough is iced full, meltwater running down the slope reaches that ridge of ice and stops. With nowhere to fall, it wicks backward under the bottom shingle course, past the drip edge and onto the decking edge.
