Roof Valley Leaks: Why Water Finds the Weak Point

Every roof has places that work harder than others, and the valley works hardest of all. A roof valley leak is not bad luck — it is physics. Two slopes dump their runoff into one narrow channel, and everything that falls on those slopes, from rain to hail to pine needles, ends up traveling through it.

That concentration is why valleys fail first on otherwise healthy roofs, and why a bad valley detail can soak a ceiling while the field shingles around it look brand new. If you are seeing a stain that lines up with the inside corner of an L-shaped roof or a dormer, the valley is the first place we look.

What Makes a Valley Different

Picture the volume. During a hard North Texas thunderstorm, water in a valley runs deep enough and fast enough to jump sideways, ride up under shingle edges, and push past details that would never leak on a flat run.

Add hail bouncing down the channel and grinding granules loose, and the valley ages faster than the roof around it. When we inspect a fifteen-year-old roof, the valley almost always looks older than the rest.

Open, Closed, and Woven: Three Ways to Build a Valley

The three common valley styles behave differently when they fail.

Open metal valleys. A formed metal channel — often with a raised center rib — is left exposed, with shingles trimmed back on each side. Water runs on metal instead of asphalt. These shed leaves and needles best and are the easiest to inspect, which makes them our preference on tree-shaded lots.

Closed-cut valleys. Shingles from one slope run through the valley, and shingles from the other slope are cut in a clean line above them. Common, tidy-looking, and reliable when the cut line is kept back from the center and the cut edges are sealed.

Woven valleys. Shingles from both slopes are laced over each other through the channel. They hold up reasonably well on three-tab shingles but do not lie flat with thicker laminated shingles, which leaves voids water can travel through.

The Layers Under a Valley Do the Real Work

A valley that lasts is built in layers, and each one has a job.

  • Ice-and-water shield. A self-adhering membrane running the full length of the valley, wide enough to cover well past the shingle cut lines. It seals around fasteners and is the backstop when water gets under the surface.
  • Valley metal. Formed galvanized or coated steel that carries the flow and protects the membrane from abrasion.
  • Underlayment. Lapped so that every layer drains onto the one below it, never behind it.

Skipping the membrane is the most common shortcut we find behind valley leaks, and it is invisible until water is already inside.

Where Valley Repairs Go Wrong

Most valley leaks trace back to one of a handful of installation errors.

Nails placed in the flow path. Fasteners driven too close to the valley center put holes exactly where water runs deepest. Nails belong well back from the channel, and the shingle above must cover them.

Cut lines too tight. Trimming closed-cut shingles right to the center leaves no clean channel, and the cut edges wick water sideways.

Debris damming. Leaves, needles, and shingle grit collect in the valley, hold moisture against the surface, and back water up under the shingle edges during heavy rain. Valleys on shaded lots need clearing more than once a year, and the debris usually ends up downstream, which is one more reason a working gutter system matters.

Hail-scoured metal. Once valley metal loses its coating, it rusts through at the low point. Bare or rust-stained metal in the channel is a repair on a clock.

Repairing a Valley the Right Way

A proper roof repair at a valley means opening it, not covering it. We lift the adjacent courses, pull the old metal, inspect the decking underneath — valleys are where rotted plywood hides — replace the membrane and metal, then reweave the shingles with fasteners kept clear of the channel.

Sealing a leaking valley with roof cement is the classic wrong answer. It traps water, cracks with the next thermal cycle, and makes the eventual repair messier. The same logic applies to flashing repair anywhere on the roof: the fix has to restore how water sheds, not just plug a hole.

If the surrounding shingles are brittle enough to crack when lifted, a valley rebuild stops making sense, and the conversation turns to roof replacement. During a full replacement, every valley gets new membrane and new metal by default — which is why leaks that never went away with patching disappear for good.
