Every satellite dish and antenna mount on a roof is a set of holes punched through the weather barrier. The mounting foot goes down, lag bolts drive through shingles and into the decking, and a bead of sealant goes over the heads. It works for a while. Then North Texas weather gets to the sealant, and a leak starts in a place the homeowner never thinks to look.
How These Mounts Get Attached
A typical dish foot is a small steel plate with three or four lag bolts. The installer finds a slope with a clear line of sight, sets the foot on top of the existing shingles, drives the bolts, and caps the heads with roofing cement or a tube of sealant.
Nothing about that assembly is flashed. There is no metal collar, no shingle woven over the penetration, no counter-flashing — just fasteners passing through the shingle and underlayment into wood, with a surface bead standing between them and the rain. Antenna masts, guy-wire anchors, and old over-the-air antenna feet are attached the same way.

Why the Sealant Gives Out Here
Sealant is a consumable, and this climate burns through it. Roof surfaces run brutally hot through the summer, UV breaks the compound down, and daily thermal cycling expands and contracts both the steel foot and the shingle underneath at different rates. Hail chips it. Wind-driven rain finds the smallest gap it leaves behind.
The steel foot itself makes things worse: it heats and cools faster than the roof, so it works against the sealant every day, and it traps debris and moisture at its edges.
Once water is in the bolt holes, the damage is out of sight. It wets the decking around the fasteners, rusts the lags, softens the wood, and travels along the rafter before ever showing on a ceiling. By the time there is a stain inside, the deck around that mount is usually soft.
Abandoned Mounts Are the Worst Offenders
The dish that stopped being used a decade ago is still bolted up there, and nobody has touched the sealant since the day it went on. We find them constantly — dead dishes, orphaned antenna masts, and bare feet left behind when a dish was pulled off but the bracket stayed.
Abandoned mounts leak quietly for years. They also snag debris, hold moisture against the shingles, and turn into projectiles in a straight-line wind. When we inspect a roof and find one, the first question is whether it is live, because dead hardware should come off.
How a Mount Should Be Removed and Patched
Removing the bracket is the easy part. The patch is what matters.
- The mount and every fastener come out, not just the visible bolts.
- The decking around each hole gets checked for rot and soft spots and repaired if needed.
- Damaged shingles are removed rather than sealed over.
- The holes are covered by new underlayment and shingles woven into the existing courses so the layering sheds water.
- Sealant supports the repair; it never is the repair.
That is the same principle behind any roof flashing repair: water should be shed by overlapping layers, not held out by chemistry. A patch done this way disappears into the slope and stops being a maintenance item.
Mounting New Equipment Without Wrecking the Roof
If you need a dish or antenna, the roof is the last place to put it. Better options, in order: a ground pole, a gable-end or fascia mount, or a non-penetrating ballasted mount on a flat section. When a roof mount truly is the only workable spot, it should be installed with proper flashing over the penetrations and located high on a slope, away from valleys, and never in a water path.
Handle It Before the Reroof, Not After
Tell your roofer about every dish, antenna, and mast before a roof replacement starts. Everything comes off at tear-off, and you decide in advance what goes back: reset on a new mount with correct flashing, relocated off the roof, or gone for good. Cable runs get planned at the same time, so nothing is left draped across new shingles or stapled through them.
For a mount already leaking, a targeted roof repair that removes the hardware and rebuilds the courses is straightforward work — as long as it happens before the decking gives up.
