Radiant Barriers in Texas Attics: What They Do

A radiant barrier is the shiny foil you see stapled under the rafters or bonded to the underside of new roof decking. In a Texas attic it has one job: reflect the radiant heat pouring off the hot underside of your roof instead of letting it land on your insulation and ductwork.

It is a genuinely useful product and a widely oversold one. Here is what it does, what it does not, and how it fits with the ventilation already on your roof.

How a Radiant Barrier Works

Heat moves three ways: conduction through solid material, convection in moving air, and radiation across open space. Insulation handles the first. Ventilation handles the second. Radiation is the one nobody addresses, and in an attic it is substantial — a deck baking at midday radiates heat down onto everything below it.

A low-emissivity foil surface reflects most of that radiant energy back. Two conditions have to be met: the reflective face must look out into an open air space, and that face must stay reasonably clean. Foil pressed flat against another material does nothing.

Sheathing-Integrated vs. Retrofit Foil

Radiant barrier decking has the foil laminated to the underside of the panel at the factory. It goes on during a roof replacement, faces down into the attic with the rafter cavity as its air space, and never needs handling again. It is the cleanest way to get one.

Staple-up retrofit foil is applied to the underside of the existing rafters, foil facing down. It performs well and works on a roof that has years left in it, though installation means working the length of a hot attic.

Loose-lay foil over the insulation is the least durable approach. It faces up, collects household dust, and loses reflectivity as it does. It can also complicate future work in the attic and hide problems from view.

What to Realistically Expect

A radiant barrier lowers attic temperature and, more importantly, lowers the temperature of anything the deck was radiating onto — ceiling insulation, stored belongings, and any HVAC ducts routed through the attic. Rooms directly under the roof tend to feel more even through the afternoon.

What it will not do is replace insulation, fix undersized ductwork, or make an under-vented attic behave. We do not attach savings figures to it, because the outcome depends entirely on your insulation depth, duct condition, and equipment. The homes that gain the most are the ones with air handlers and duct runs sitting in the attic, and those with shallow ceiling insulation over living space. A house with deep insulation, sealed ducts, and balanced ventilation has already captured most of what a barrier would have delivered.

Barriers and Ventilation Are a Package

A radiant barrier cuts the radiant load. Ventilation removes the hot air that remains. Skip the second and you have a cooler-facing deck over a stagnant attic that still traps moisture in winter.

Two installation rules matter here. The barrier must never block soffit intake at the eaves — foil run too far down the rafters seals the very opening the attic depends on. And it must leave clearance around recessed lights, flues, and chimneys per the manufacturer's instructions.

Does a radiant barrier have an R-value? Not in the usual sense. Insulation slows conducted heat and is rated in R-value. A radiant barrier reflects radiant heat and is rated by emissivity instead. It works alongside insulation and does not replace any of it.

Is radiant barrier sheathing better than stapled-up foil? It is cleaner and permanent, because the foil is bonded to the decking and faces the attic with a built-in air space. The drawback is timing. You only get that option while the decking is off, so it belongs to a re-roof.

Do radiant barriers stop working over time? Foil laid flat over attic insulation collects dust, and dust on the surface cuts reflectivity. Barriers installed facing down under the rafters stay far cleaner, which is why we prefer that orientation on retrofit work.

Can a radiant barrier trap moisture in my attic? It can if solid foil is installed where water vapor needs to pass through. Perforated products let vapor move, and working ventilation carries it out of the attic. A barrier should never be run down over the soffit intake.
