A patio or porch roof is a simple structure with one genuinely difficult part: the place it touches the house. That junction is where nearly every failure we get called out for begins.

The covering itself rarely fails first. What fails is the connection — the ledger board bolted to the wall, the flashing over it, and the way the new roof plane ties into siding, brick or an existing eave.

The Ledger Is a Structural and Water Detail at Once

A ledger board is the horizontal member fastened to the house that carries one end of the patio roof. It has two jobs that pull against each other: it must be firmly attached to structure, and it must not create a path for water into the wall.

Structurally, the ledger needs to reach real framing — rim board, studs or a properly blocked wall — with fasteners sized and spaced for the load. Attaching to fascia, siding or a single trim board is a shortcut that shows up later as sag, then as a torn-loose connection in a straight-line wind event.

Water-wise, every bolt through that ledger is a hole in the building envelope. Which is why the flashing above it matters more than the bolts themselves.

Flashing the Wall Junction

The rule is simple: water leaving the wall above has to end up on top of the patio roof covering, never behind it.

That means metal flashing turned up behind the siding or into a mortar joint on brick, then bent out over the top of the ledger and lapped onto the new roof surface. Where the patio roof meets a wall running downslope, step flashing is required, along with a kick-out at the lower end to throw water clear of the siding.

Sealant is not flashing. A bead of caulk along the top of a ledger looks tidy on install day and cracks within a couple of North Texas summers, after which every rain runs straight into the wall. Slope and Covering

Patio roofs are usually built shallow, because they have to tuck under an existing eave or a window head. That almost always puts them below the approved slope for asphalt shingles.

Shingling a shallow patio cover to match the house is one of the most common mistakes we find. It works for a season or two, then water begins working sideways under the laps. The correct answer is a covering rated for low pitch — a membrane or a metal panel system — as explained in our guide to low-slope sections on a shingle home.

Metal panels are especially popular on patio covers here because they handle low slope, shed leaves, and stand up to hail better than a thin shingle over open framing.

Drainage Off a Patio Roof

The area added by a patio cover has to drain somewhere, and that somewhere is usually right next to the foundation.

Without a gutter, runoff sheets off the outer edge and lands in a line along the patio slab or the flowerbed. In expansive North Texas clay, repeatedly soaking one strip of soil next to the house is exactly the kind of moisture cycling that moves foundations. A gutter and a downspout carrying water away is cheap insurance.

Also check where the patio roof discharges into the existing system. Tying a new plane into an undersized gutter run just moves the overflow to a new spot.

Permits and Common DIY Failures

Attached covers are regulated differently from freestanding ones in most jurisdictions, and requirements vary between cities and unincorporated county areas. Check locally before building — an unpermitted attached structure can surface later during a sale or a claim.

The failures we see most often on homeowner-built and handyman-built covers:

  • Ledger fastened to fascia or siding instead of framing.
  • Caulk substituted for flashing at the wall.
  • Shingles used below their minimum slope.
  • No kick-out where the cover meets a downslope wall.
  • Posts set without proper footings, letting the outer edge settle and reverse the drainage.
