How metal roofs handle hail
Metal is one of the toughest roofing options for hail country. It does not crack like old asphalt or lose granules, and most storms leave it looking fine. Large, dense hail is another matter. The softer the metal and the thinner the gauge, the easier it dents. The profile matters too: flat areas between ribs dent more visibly than the stiff ribs themselves.
Standing seam versus exposed-fastener panels
On a standing seam roof, the fasteners are hidden under the seams, so hail mostly affects the panel faces and seam tops. On exposed-fastener panels, common on barns, shops and many homes in Wise County, hail can also hit screw heads and their rubber washers. A crushed or cracked washer is a small leak waiting to happen.

Cosmetic damage

Functional damage
Functional damage affects the roof's ability to keep water out or to last as long as it should. Things an inspector looks for include:
- Punctures or tears in the metal.
- Cracked or chipped paint and coating that exposes the steel beneath, which invites rust.
- Dented seams or ribs that open laps or stop panels from interlocking properly.
- Crushed fastener washers, bent screws or panels pulled loose around fasteners.
- Damaged flashing, ridge caps, trim and pipe boots.
Why the coating matters
A dent with the finish intact is usually cosmetic. The same dent with a cracked finish can start to corrode, which turns a cosmetic issue into a functional one over time. Inspectors look closely at the finish around each impact.
Cosmetic damage exclusions in Texas policies
Many Texas insurers offer or require an endorsement that excludes cosmetic hail damage to metal roofs. Under that language, dents that do not affect function may not be covered, while damage that lets water in or compromises the roof usually still is.
