The Four Main Types of Gutter Guards
Screen mesh
Coarse metal or plastic screens snap over the gutter. They stop whole leaves and cost little, but oak catkins, seeds, and shingle granules pass straight through. Reasonable under big-leaf trees; weak against live oaks.
Micro-mesh
A fine stainless weave on a rigid frame. This is the strongest all-around performer in our area because it blocks catkins, granules, and roof grit while still passing heavy rain. The trade-off is that pollen and fine debris eventually film the surface, so it needs an occasional brushing to keep flowing.
Reverse-curve
A solid hood that sheds leaves over the edge while water follows the curve into a slot. It handles big leaves well, but in a hard Texas downpour water can overshoot the slot, and the hood profile is visible from the ground.
Foam inserts
Foam wedges pushed into the gutter. Texas UV and 100-degree summers break foam down quickly, seeds sprout in it, and it becomes part of the clog. We rarely recommend it.
How Gutter Guards Hold Up to Hail and Heat
Guards sit in the line of fire, and hail reaches them before it reaches the gutter. Quality metal mesh may dent yet keep working. Cheap plastic is the real casualty: a few Texas summers of UV make it brittle, and the next hailstorm cracks it apart. Aluminum frames and stainless mesh handle both the sun and the stones far better. After any major hail event, have the guards looked at during the same visit as the roof.
The Maintenance Truth Nobody Puts in the Brochure
No guard eliminates maintenance. Granules, pollen, and fine grit still build up, so plan on a quick seasonal check and brush-off. What good guards genuinely change is the nature of the chore: no more scooping packed, rotting muck by the handful, fewer ladder trips, and — most importantly — gutters that keep flowing during the storm itself, which is the only moment that really counts.
When Skipping Guards Is Completely Fine
Plenty of homes do not need them. If you are in a newer subdivision where the tallest tree is a ten-foot live oak in the front yard, there is simply not much debris to guard against yet. Single-story homes with easy gutter access also change the math, since cleaning is quick and safe.
