A bathroom vent roof penetration is one of the smallest details on a roof and one of the most commonly botched. It is a hole cut through your decking, a duct crossing an unconditioned attic, and a cap that has to shed North Texas rain and 100°F sun for the life of the shingles around it.
Done right, you never think about it again. Done the way we routinely find it in Wise County attics, that same fan feeds moisture into your insulation and hands water a path toward your ceiling. Kitchen exhaust adds its own rules on top of that.
Where Bathroom and Kitchen Vents Have to End Up
Exhaust fans exist to move humid air out of the building. Not into the attic, not into a soffit cavity, not aimed at a gable louver — outside.
When a duct stops short, every shower's worth of water lands on the coldest surfaces in the house: the underside of the decking, the truss chords, and the face of the insulation.
The soffit termination deserves its own warning. Soffit vents are the intake side of your attic ventilation, so wet air discharged there gets drawn right back in above it. The shortcut survives because it is fast and invisible from the ground.
The Roof Penetration: Cap, Flashing, and Damper
A correct roof termination is not complicated, but it has parts that get skipped:
- A dedicated cap sized to the duct. Necking a larger duct down to a smaller collar throttles the fan and stretches out every dry-out cycle.
- Flashing woven into the shingle courses. The flange goes under the shingles above and over the shingles below, so water always runs on top of the material beneath it.
- Fasteners placed and sealed properly. Sealant supplements the detail; it never substitutes for correct shingle overlap.
That last point is where most failures start. A cap surface-nailed on top of finished shingles and buttered with mastic looks fine on install day, then weeps a few Texas summers later once thermal cycling has aged the sealant out.
Backdraft Dampers
Every exhaust cap should carry a damper — a light flap that swings open under airflow and falls shut when the fan stops. Without one you get outside air pouring back down the duct, a cold draft in the bathroom, and an open invitation to wasps and birds.
Insulated Duct Stops the Condensation Drip
Above the ceiling, three things decide whether the system works.
Insulation. Bare flex duct crossing a cold attic turns shower steam straight back into liquid water. Insulated duct keeps the inner surface above the dew point, so moisture stays airborne until it exits the cap.
Slope and support. The run should be short, straight, and rising steadily toward the termination, strapped so it cannot sag. Every low spot becomes a water trap, and a trap full of water becomes a blockage.
Connections. Both ends get clamped and sealed. Duct that was only pushed onto a collar works loose over time, and nobody finds out until someone crawls up there.
Kitchen Vents Play by Different Rules
Range hood exhaust carries grease, so it gets smooth-wall metal duct instead of flex, a dedicated termination, and a cap with no insect screen — screens load up with grease and choke the hood. It should never tie into a bath fan run or a plumbing vent.
Builder Shortcuts We Find in North Texas Attics
On repair jobs around Decatur we meet the same shortcuts again and again: a duct lying disconnected beside its cap, two bath fans teed into one termination, a cap with no damper, a fan discharging into open insulation, and long sags of bare flex draped across the trusses.

Fixing Vent Roof Penetrations During a Reroof
The easiest time to correct all of this is when the shingles are already off. During a roof replacement the decking is exposed and a proper cap can be set into the new courses rather than pinned on top of them. We re-terminate strays, add dampers, replace tired pipe boots, and swap sagging bare flex for insulated duct on a real slope.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a bathroom fan vent into the attic? No. It dumps warm, humid air onto cold sheathing and insulation, and that is how attics grow mold and decking delaminates. The duct has to carry that air all the way outside through a roof cap or a wall cap.
Is venting a bath fan into the soffit good enough? It is a shortcut we would not install. Soffit vents are the attic's intake, so damp air blown out there gets pulled straight back in above it. Terminate through a roof cap, or a wall cap set well away from any intake vent.
Why does my bathroom fan drip water? Usually condensation rather than a roof leak. Humid air cools inside an uninsulated duct crossing a cold attic, water pools in a sagging low spot, and it runs back down to the fan housing. Insulated duct on a steady upward slope solves it.
