Roof Leak? Here’s What to Do Before the Pros Arrive

Discovering a roof leak can feel overwhelming, especially when water starts dripping into your living space. Whether it’s a slow drip or a sudden burst during a storm, acting quickly can save you time, money, and stress. While it’s important to contact professional roofing contractors as soon as possible, there are a few key steps you can take to minimize damage before help arrives.

Contain the Water Immediately

As soon as you notice a leak, your first step should be to catch the water. Use a bucket, large bowl, or even a plastic bin to contain the dripping. This helps prevent water from soaking into your floors or furniture. If water is splashing out of the container, place an old towel inside to reduce the impact and noise.

Protect Your Belongings

Move anything valuable or sensitive out of the affected area. This includes electronics, rugs, and furniture. If some items cannot be moved, cover them with plastic sheets or trash bags to prevent water damage. Keeping the area clear also allows roofing contractors easier access when they arrive.

Release Trapped Water in the Ceiling

If you notice a bulge forming in the ceiling, it may be holding a pool of water. Use a screwdriver or similar tool to carefully poke a small hole in the center and allow the water to drain into a bucket. This may seem counterintuitive, but controlled drainage can prevent a full ceiling collapse later.

Try to Locate the Source (From the Ground)

If the weather allows and it’s safe, try to spot the source of the leak from inside your home or from the ground outside. Look for signs of missing shingles, clogged gutters, or damaged flashing. Avoid climbing onto the roof yourself, especially during or after rain. Leave the physical inspection to the professionals.

Document the Damage

Take clear photos of any visible damage, water stains, and the areas affected inside your home. This documentation will be helpful for your roofing contractors as well as for insurance purposes if you need to file a claim.
